About us

We’re here to help islanders rebuild their lives after brain injury and stroke, restoring independence, confidence, and hope through free rehabilitation, therapy, and family support.

Our Day Centre is a welcoming space where survivors can spend time, connect with others, and take part in structured rehabilitation sessions up to three times a week. Our Day centre is a supportive social hub where people can rebuild confidence, regain independence, and receive guidance on how to navigate life after a brain injury. We’re always here to listen, to help, and to make recovery feel possible again.

About the charity

Headway Jersey was founded in 1997 by two families brought together through shared experience, each with a child who had sustained a brain injury.

Seeing the lack of local support, they created a community to help survivors, their families, and carers rebuild life after injury.

What began with just seven members has grown into a vital island-wide charity, now supporting over 140 survivors every year through rehabilitation, guidance, and hope.

Community Stories

  • Finding Hope After Brain Injury

Paul's Story: Finding Hope After Brain Injury

Life changed forever for Paul when a workplace accident left him with a severe brain injury. After two years of searching for help, Sue and Paul found Headway Jersey, a place that offered guidance, patience, and hope.

Through classes and community support, Paul regained confidence and purpose, discovering a passion for art that transformed his recovery. For Sue, Headway became a lifeline for their whole family, where fear turned into reassurance, and isolation became community.

Today, Sue serves as an Ambassador, sharing their story so others know they are not alone, and that recovery, connection, and hope truly begin at Headway Jersey.

  • Giving Back After Loss

Terry's Story: Giving Back After Loss

Alison began volunteering with Headway Jersey in 2021, inspired by the care and support her husband Terry received after his stroke in 2005. As his mobility declined, Terry attended Headway’s Tuesday exercise classes, where transport was arranged so he could stay active and connected.

After Terry sadly passed away, Alison continued volunteering as a way to give back to the charity that had meant so much to them both. She describes it as deeply rewarding — a chance to honour Terry’s memory while supporting others on their journey of recovery and hope.

  • Wayne’s Story: Running Toward Recovery

    Wayne’s Story: Running Toward Recovery

Wayne was an active marathon runner when, during a local 5km race in St Helier, his life changed in an instant. He suffered a severe stroke caused by a blockage in his brain and was flown to Southampton for emergency surgery that saved his life.

After weeks in hospital and a year of speech therapy, Wayne worked hard to rebuild his strength and confidence. He later discovered a hole in his heart had caused the stroke and underwent surgery to repair it. Despite ongoing challenges, including post-stroke epilepsy, Wayne has returned to running and now volunteers with Headway Jersey, giving back to others on the same journey of recovery and resilience.

Meet Our Ambassadors & Regular Volunteers

  • After falling over seven feet at work, Paul suffered a traumatic brain injury that changed everything. For two years, his family searched for support until they found Headway Jersey.

Through our Day Centre and art sessions, Paul slowly regained confidence, purpose, and a sense of belonging. His wife, Sue, calls Headway “a lifeline” not just for Paul, but for their whole family.

Now, Sue is one of our proud Ambassadors, helping other families find the hope and support they need, just like they did.

  • With a 25-year career in nursing and healthcare, including his role as a Senior Health Care Assistant for the Government of Jersey’s Special Needs Department, Steve brought with him a wealth of professional knowledge, compassion, and expert care. He was also a trained minibus driver through his work in Health and Social Services, which made him an invaluable addition to our transport service.
