Headway Bus Service
The Headway Bus Service Keeps Every Member Connected, Safe, and Included
Door-to-door, island wide transport service is often the only safe link between home and the rehabilitation people urgently need.
About the Bus Service
For many islanders living with a brain injury, travelling independently is simply not possible. Loss of confidence, mobility challenges, cognitive impairments, visual issues, or balance problems can turn a simple journey into a dangerous and overwhelming barrier.
Headway’s door-to-door transport service is often the only safe link between home and the rehabilitation they urgently need.
This service is not optional. It is essential, and it keeps people out of crisis, out of isolation, and out of hospital.
For many of our weekly members:
Leaving the house alone is unsafe.
Public transport is overwhelming and inaccessible.
Family members cannot always take time off work to provide transport.
Taxis are unaffordable long-term and often not equipped for neurological or mobility needs.
Without our bus, up to half of our members would not be able to attend the Day Centre at all.
Transport is often the difference between:
Isolation vs community,
Decline vs progress,
Crisis vs stability,
Hospital readmission vs rehabilitation,
Being homebound vs rebuilding a life.
What the Service Provides
• Door-to-Door Pick-Up and Drop-Off: Safe, reliable transport directly from each member’s home to the Centre.
• Accessible Vehicle: Equipped for mobility challenges, balance issues, and neurological impairments.
• Trained, Patient Drivers: Experienced in working with vulnerable adults, providing safe handling, supervision, and understanding.
• Inclusive Access: Ensures members with confidence loss, cognitive issues, or mobility limitations can still participate fully in rehabilitation.

The True Cost of Keeping Members Connected
Headway operates a fully accessible bus with drivers who understand the needs, risks, and vulnerabilities associated with brain injury.
To deliver this service safely and consistently, we must raise:
£40,622 per year
to cover fuel, maintenance, insurance, licensing, accessibility compliance, safety checks, driver hours, and operational costs.
This transport enables members to attend rehabilitation, social connection, and structured routines three days a week, providing a lifeline many would otherwise lose.
How you or your company can support the bus service project:
Your support keeps the wheels turning, quite literally, and ensures that no member is left behind due to transport barriers.
