A Therapeutic Allotment for Brain Injury Survivors

The Headway Healing Garden in St John

We are wishing for a Therapeutic Allotment for Our Brain Injury Survivors.

About the Therapeutic Allotment - The Headway Healing Garden

At Headway Jersey, we support individuals living with acquired brain injuries through rehabilitation, therapeutic activities, and community support. Our members include stroke survivors and individuals recovering from traumatic brain injuries who often face long-term physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges.

We are currently developing a new initiative that we believe will have a profound impact on our members’ wellbeing: The Headway Healing Garden

This project will transform an unused allotment space into a fully accessible therapeutic garden designed specifically for people living with brain injuries and mobility challenges.

We are inviting forward-thinking corporate partners to help us bring this space to life.

Our Vision

The Headway Healing Garden will provide a safe, accessible outdoor space where brain injury survivors can take part in therapeutic gardening activities.

Research shows that horticultural therapy can significantly improve:

• cognitive recovery
• mood and emotional wellbeing
• motor skills and coordination
• confidence and independence
• social connection

For many of our members, outdoor therapeutic activities are vital in rebuilding both physical and emotional strength.

This garden will become a permanent part of our rehabilitation programme, allowing members to engage in meaningful activities such as planting, growing vegetables, and maintaining the garden together, and boost their personal nutrition through enjoying our own produce.

Why This Project Matters

The True Cost of Keeping Members Connected

Brain injuries often leave people feeling isolated, disconnected, and limited in what they can do physically.

Accessible gardening provides:

• gentle physical rehabilitation
• sensory stimulation
• cognitive engagement
• emotional calm and stress reduction
• meaningful social interaction

For wheelchair users and individuals with mobility challenges, accessible garden design is essential. This project will include raised planting beds designed specifically for wheelchair users, wide pathways.

The space will also provide opportunities for corporate volunteer engagement, allowing employees to support the maintenance and development of the garden while connecting with the community.

The Project

We will transform a  48 m² allotment space (12m x 4m) into a fully accessible therapeutic garden with direct minibus parking outside.

The garden will include:

• wheelchair-accessible raised planting beds
• accessible 1.5m wide pathways
• seating and social spaces
• herb and vegetable gardens
• storage for gardening equipment

The design has been developed to ensure full accessibility for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility.

Corporate Partnership Opportunities

We are seeking corporate partners who would like to support this project financially and through volunteer engagement.

• Named recognition as a founding partner of the Headway Healing Garden
• Company logo displayed within the garden
• social media and press recognition
• Corporate volunteer day for employees for 12 months.
• Recognition in Headway annual impact report
